Emerald Road Trip and Carnarvon Gorge Trail Run 2013

…. well it started with a phone call from my buddy Jason Cheshire from Infinit Nutrition.
“hey smithy…. ya up for a road trip to the Emerald Triathlon and on the way back we will call into Carnarvon Gorge and do a 90k trail run”

The offer was just to good to resist and so just 4 weeks later we packed Jason’s trusty Daewoo Wagon and hit the road.  After 6 days of hammering around country Queensland, I have a new-found respect for Daewoo’s.  With the back full of Infinit Nutrition and all our kit, the little Daewoo ponies just kept on running despite our best efforts by trying to make em run without fuel?.

Sat was spent driving to Emerald and hooking up with Jason’s long time mate Craig “johno” Johnston and after a couple of cooling ales and a jaunt around his yard on his motorised esky, we caught some needed sleep. Johno runs an awesome bike shop called Pushy Bikes in Emerald and his cool mechanic “bieber” even lent me his Specialized Tarmac to ride in the Emerald Tri

Sun dawned with a perfect sunrise and we headed off to Fairburn Dam for the annual Emerald Triathlon for a triple showdown between “the coach” “johno” and “chesthairs”.  Well Jase smashed us all and finished third with Johno and I running in together down the field. Back to Johno’s castle and after a couple more cooling ales it was time for a recovering dip in the dam followed by more ripping around on the motorised esky and dinner at Johno’s neighbours house. This was where I tripped over in the dark and smashed up my ankle pretty bad, but again a couple of cooling ales seemed to fix it up.

Tue morn saw us arrive at Carnarvon Gorge and after some initial concern by the ranger station we were on our way across the Carnarvon Great Walk. It turns out that you are supposed to allow 6 to 7 days to complete the entire trail and Jase and I had planned on finishing in 2 days, something which the ranger couldn’t stop laughing at. Well after the first 2 hours we were starting to sense why they say that it takes 6 days. We had planned on running most of the 90km trail and thus headed off in running kit with just “fastpacks” on our backs, but after just a few km’s of running we found ourselves walking for nearly 2 hours on rocks followed by a 300ft (almost vertical) climb up a ravine and then another 1hr trudge up and over “Battleship Ridge” giving us a total of 2100ft of elevation gain in the first 15k … so much for our training run ??.

The end result was that instead of doing some sightseeing along the way, we pretty much put in a forced march at tempo to keep to our 2 day plan.  Still, along the way we had a ton of fun and got to see some pretty awesome views and some cool wildlife. The reality was that only about 20 to 30% of the track was “runnable” with most of it being very rocky underfoot with a lot of vegetation over it. Navigation was also a bit sketchy in parts but pretty good for the most part.  We will do it again but next time we will plan on 3 days to take advantage of the awesome sights and scenes along the way.

A huge thanks to my buddy Jason from Infinit Nutrition and to Altra Zero Drop Shoes and to Injinji Performance Products and to Pushy Bikes and to Squeaky Cheeks

Altra Zero Drop – Superior

Hey Team …. just wanted to add another great test of the Altra Zero Drop Superiors.  Aside from being a great off road shoe which we have posted about before, I had the chance to give the Superior a great urban test on friday night during the 3hr City Raid here in Brisbane. The City Raid is an urban challenge in the style of The Great Race. It involves running around the CBD of Bris Vegas collecting checkpoints and completing challenges for extra points. Check it out at Dare You Adventure.

Now the hard paved city streets is not the environment where you would expect a trail shoe to shine ….. but the Superiors were just fantastic. Their light feather weight and enormous flexibility proved to be the perfect combo for fast urban running across a variety of paths and kerbs. I spent over 3 hrs hammering these babies around this urban environment and my feet were just fine. Normally a few hours of running on city streets would leave me a little sore underfoot but not this time. The Superiors were fantastic and proved their shock absorbing ability again. Add to this that once again I wore my Injinji Performance Socks and you have a combo that will let you focus on your task without the hassle of what going on down below.

Huge thanks to Altra Zero Drop Shoes and Paul and Narelle from Injinji Performance Products for their support.

Altra Superior …….

Hey Team …. just wanted to jump on and give you my initial impression of my new kicks, the Superior from Altra Zero Drop Shoes.  Man these are awesome !!! How’s that for a review.

The Superior is Altra’s latest super lightweight trail runner and ….. man are they light. From the moment you slip these babies on your feet you know that you are in for a special running experience. Based on Altra’s famous zero drop profile the Superiors are low flat and very very fast. As for grip they are as good as their predecessor the “Lone Peak” and of course the tail rudder is still there which gives me good flashback feelings to the late 70′s.  One of the real key features of this shoe is the removable rockplate and innersole which makes the shoe very customisable to your own preference and to the trail you are on that day. It take only a few seconds to rip out the rock plate and you are left with a super flexible and comfortable shoe. Throw the plate back in and you can tackle even the knarliest and rocky trail. On top of all this you have the famous Altra wide and roomy “foot shaped” toe box.

I have run this shoe over 8 laps of The Coach Jeff test track and it’s performance amazed me. It grips, It drains water well and never felt like letting me down. My test track is a 4k loop and has sand, rocky climbs, a water crossing with a very muddy exit and open flat fire trail

The Coach gives this shoe a 10/10 for comfort, fit and performance.

The 10 in 12 in 2012 …….???

Hey Team …. just having my coffee before heading out the door for Marathon number 10 for 2012.  What started out as 12 in 12 will now probably be the 10 in 12 as I think this will be my last marathon for the year. With Xterra Great Ocean Rd in April now being my big priority and a few knee problems starting to show up, I don’t think it is wise to run another two marathons this year. It has been a ton of fun and today is going to be awesome as Jason from Infinit Nutrition is meeting me out on the course today cover the last 20km.  So another quick coffee and it’s away we go …. see ya out there on the road.

The 12 in 12 – August 2012

Hey Team …. well my mission to run 12 Marathons in 12 months continued with number 8 in what turned out to be another epic screwy adventure. The plan was to run from Kallangur to Nth Pine Dam then up and over Clear Mt and across towards Samford going up and over Basin Mt and on into Dayboro for coffee and donuts. The run started nicely with cool overcast conditions and was clearing as I approached Nth Pine Dam. However across the dam the air was getting heavy with smoke and I realized that there were bushfires burning across my run route.  I then started a zig-zag run to get around the back of the fire zone and up over Clear Mt. Got through the fire zone without any danger (apart from near suffocating) and once on top I enjoyed a beautiful sunny day on the roads and trails to Dayboro. Got the fright of my life when I nearly trod on a snake laying in the sun on the side of Mt Samson Rd. I don’t who jumped more , the snake or me ! Got some great pic and vids along the way. Probably should spend more time running and less time fluffing around. In the end it was 44.3km in 6hrs 53mins wooohooo  Big THANKS to Infinit Nutrition and Squeaky Cheeks

Sunday Long Run

Hey Team … a great Sunday long run yesterday.  Ran the trails around the Nth Pine Dam.
This is one of my favourite places to run. It’s only minutes from suburbia but offers peace and quiet. 3hrs of running and only saw one other person. Run was 2hrs of easy running doing 2.00min run and 0.30sec of walking followed by 15mins of hill repeats then 45mins of tempo running as 30secs on and 30secs off over hilly terrain.  A great run !!
